Not a movie for you. Why? Because streaming

July 2, 2014

It happened to someone you know. It happened to someone you love. Maybe it's even happened to you.   Yes, you know what I mean. The movie you downloaded your long flight seems to have disappeared from your computer.

Here's how it plays: settle you into your seat on the plane, get out your tablet, open Netflix and click on this film that you saved for the vol. and... What? It will not play.  In the confusion and the utter frustration that you say, 'but I downloaded it! Why is he not here on my computer!" Too tired to understand, you just music instead. You open Spotify, choose your favorite playlist, press play, and... Nada. The music will play not or the other.  So what's the story?

It is all about the difference between downloading and streaming. Let's clear this upwards by putting it in terms we all understand.

Say that you're standing in your bathroom.  Your shower faucet is like your Internet connection.  Water is information, in this case, the movie or the music.

Streaming a movie, it's like take in the shower.

If you open the the shower faucet, water starts to flow. You can see it, feel it, hear it.  But once you close the faucet, the water goes down the drain and disappears.  It goes the same for streaming. When you are connected to the Internet, you can press play to activate the data stream and watch a movie. When you are not connected to the Internet, you have turned off the flow, so the film, such as a shower water, disappears.  You can not watch the movie more.

Downloading a movie, it's like taking a bath.

a bath is like a download

To take a bath, you close the drain, the water and fill the bathtub. When you get in the bathtub, which is still there? The water!  It goes the same for download.  In this case, you connect to the Internet, click on a download button to close the drain, and then download the movie.  Once the finished film download you close the valve by disconnecting the Internet. Now you have a movie downloaded on your computer.  Like water in a tub, it sits there you wait.

A good way to check if you have actually downloaded something to your computer or Tablet must disconnect from the Internet and see if the film will play while you're still in your House or near a connection if you need to set a download. And not all services allow you to download. Netflix, for example, only allows streaming, so that you can actually download movies on iTunes and Amazon.

Next time you're poised to take this long flight, check that you have downloaded from your movies.  If this is not the case, at least, you'll understand why you pay the air transport for Internet access to use their "faucet" and release your film.
