Last month, I explained how to turn a common household object in a convenient smartphone support, the idea being that activities such as reading the book, I look at the film and video chat are shoring of hands free screen.
Of course, this particular DIY project - a strategically folded plastic card - seems not very pretty, and it's not exactly portable once you have Origami he had formed. The more accommodating smartphone stand should go Whither your smartphone.
This is why I'm pretty jazze on the SlideStand, an ingeniously simple, incredibly practical accessory that adds a crutch to almost any smartphone.
This small plastic aid measures 2.6 1.6-inch and about 3mm thick. It adheres to the back of your phone (or, better yet, the case of your phone), riding shotgun in a way that is barely noticeable.
Barely perceptible, that is, until you eject the stand - an arm that folds open on a grooved hinge that allows multiple positions. Not only several angles, see; multiple positions, which means landscape and portrait. This flexibility means that you can back up your phone in a vertical position for reading books and video-chat with friends, or put it on the side for watching movies and browse Web pages.
It's a big deal, because even if many cases smartphone built crutches, but most of them limit you landscape orientation. And I want the portrait, dang it! Books were intended for reading in this way.
The arm can hold about eight different locations, each offering a slightly different angle of view. The action is steep but solid; I can't say with certainty if the plastic will be held after, say, a year of friction, but out of the box, it feels durable enough.
The cost is good for its durability. It may be because I've seen far too many gadgets of Kickstarter overpriced, but I expect the SlideStand sell for at least $10, or $15 or $20. Instead, it's a steal at $7.99.
With regard to compatibility, I tried with an iPhone 5, mammoth size phablet OnePlus one. It worked perfectly with the two - although that made substantive portrait round look an a bit wonky. Your mileage may vary depending on the size and design of your phone, but most should be able to make this work.
I have exactly two complaints with the product. First of all, it is available in your choice of a dozen colors, but most of them are very ugly combinations; Pink and green, red and purple, for example. (Interestingly, four of those garish combos are currently on sale for only $4.50 - and easily repaired with a can of spray paint.) My advice: choose the version entirely black or entirely white.
The other problem is with the adhesive used to attach the SlideStand to your device. It is semi permanent, which means that it loses most of its stickiness if you decide to withdraw support. This is by design and necessary, so it can adhere to most surfaces of telephone and the case, but other adhesives there to relettree. This could benefit.
That being said, if you've ever dreamed of that your smartphone had a crutch, few options is also cheap, easier and more versatile than the SlideStand. I really dig this thing.
